Since 2011, Charleston Mattress® has operated a showroom dedicated exclusively to locally built mattresses. Every year, the team helps thousands of customers find the right mattress while gaining firsthand insight into how people shop and how buying habits continue to evolve.
One trend became impossible to ignore: many younger adults were bypassing mattress stores in favor of bed-in-a-box brands. But choosing a mattress without trying it first can be a costly gamble, and frequent online returns create unnecessary waste.

Olin Ravenel, Jr. - Director of Deliveries
One of Charleston Mattress' most knowledgeable team members is Olin Ravenel, the company's Director of Deliveries. For more than 15 years, Olin has delivered handmade mattresses from the factory in North Charleston to thousands of local bedrooms, giving him a unique, boots-on-the-ground perspective on what customers value most. He's seen it all—from first apartments to forever homes—and understands the importance of quality craftsmanship, lasting comfort, and a fair price.
When it came time to name the newest mattress, the team turned to Olin for inspiration. Is NiLo a nod to its Nitro Response® Low Temperature Memory Foam? Does it simply stand for a Nice Looking mattress? You could make the case for both. But the real story is even simpler: NiLo is "Olin" spelled backward—a tribute to his years of dedication and the practical, customer-first approach he brings to the business every day.
BedShred Mattress Recycling
Since 2015, BedShred has collected and recycled old mattresses throughout the Charleston area, keeping millions of pounds of bedding out of local landfills. Along the way, the company gained a rare understanding of how mattresses are actually used—and why they're replaced.
The team noticed two recurring patterns: college students frequently relied on cooling memory foam toppers to improve inexpensive mattresses, and many online bed-in-a-box mattresses arrived for recycling after only a few months, often following trial-period returns.
Those observations helped shape the NiLo, combining the cooling features people were adding after purchase with the durability and support they wanted from the start.
